Why do numbers matter in writing stories?

Numbers in news media can cause severe confusion but can also help emphasize the significance of the number. Replacing the number with the actually respective word can help simply a story with a large amount of different numbers. However using numbers like percents can help cause misunderstandings within the story if they add normal numbers with the percents.
